Description

Details

This custom Nooelec SDR is a modified DVB-T USB dongle tuned for SDR usage, including a high-accuracy, Japanese fabricated, GPS-rated 0.5PPM TCXO crystal, and improved capacitors and inductors compared to generic devices. Full compatibility with a large array of software packages, such as MATLAB®, HDSDR, SDR Touch, SDR#, Planeplotter--too many to list.

MathWorks® and Nooelec have coordinated to bring MATLAB® support for our SDR receivers. The RTL-SDR radio support package enables you to design wireless receivers using real world signals. Using Communications System Toolbox™ in conjunction with an RTL-SDR USB radio, you can design and prototype systems that process real-time wireless signals in MATLAB® and Simulink®

Wireless engineers, students, and hobbyists can learn to receive and decode real-world radio signals using this low cost RTL-SDR hardware connected to your computer.

The perfect device for learning software defined radio, on the cheap. Amateur radio, ADS-B, police & fire scanning, trunking, satellite images--you name it, this little guy can probably do it. Outperforms many devices 10x its cost!

These units are based on the R820 (R820T2) tuner IC made by Rafael Micro. This provides substantial performance improvements over R820T in both lab and real-life usage scenarios.  They have a frequency capability of approximately 25MHz-1750MHz, though this can vary somewhat from unit to unit. There is also an RTL2832 (RTL2832U) IC on board of course, which acts as the demodulator and USB interface.

The connector type on the antenna and USB board is MCX--male MCX on the antenna, female MCX on the SDR. There are plenty of adapter and adapter cables available in our store if you want to connect your favorite antenna!

Want HF too? You can modify the dongle for HF reception, but it's really a bad way of doing things. If you would like to do this please contact us and we'll be happy to walk you through it. However, we strongly recommend you take a look at the upconverter available in the link above which will let you listen all the way down to 100kHz or lower with impeccable sensitivity

Great starter deal for ADS-BReview by PuceBaboon

I wanted to get started with ADS-B and, having just been bitten by a cheap, EBay fake (advertised as an R620T2, but actually an N0012) I decided to come directly to the maker's site and order from here. I was pleasantly surprised to find this kit (the
Mini 2+ with antenna and remote control), including a temperature controlled oscillator, on sale at a great price. It has everything a noob like me requires and is pretty much plug-and-go (I'm a Unix user and the dump1090 software for this module is widely available for Linux and BSD variants -- HINT: Grab the dump1090-mutability package for ADS-B use).

I live in Japan, so I was also pleasantly surprised that the shipping cost was a one-size-fits-all deal and (at the time of writing, anyway) you can have the unit shipped for $5 to anywhere in the world.

The parcel took 2-weeks and one day to get to my address (in rural Japan), so the shipping speed was also pretty good.

Once it arrived, I had the unit working and receiving data from planes within five minutes of ripping the package open (granted, I already had dump1090 installed from my previous, failed attempts with the EBay lemon); it couldn't have been any easier.

The system this unit is plugged into is a FriendlyArm NanoPi M1, running Arch Linux and it was very easy to set up (from the command line).

If you haven't guessed already, I'm very, very happy with this unit. It barely gets warmto the touch and there have been no issues with it at all. According to the FlightAware.com stats page (look for "PuceBaboon"), the system is logging an average of 470 individual flights per day (from a very challenging location, in a deep valley between two major mountain ranges) using the supplied antenna sited on an upstairs window-sill, Amazing stuff!
