Description

Details

This premium RTL-SDR was designed, developed and fabricated by Nooelec in the USA and Canada in order to implement a wide array of feature requests.

The integrated, highly-regulated 4.5V bias-tee is ready to power your RF accessories--no hardware or software modifications are required to activate the bias-tee. The bias-tee is protected by an automatically resetting fuse, to ensure your investment is safe from accidental short-circuits of the RF input.

Compared to R820T-based devices, this E4000-based SDR excels at sensitivity at <500MHz and >1500MHz, and is capable of far higher frequencies--up to approximately 2350MHz. There is a small gap in frequency capability near 1100MHz. As such, we do NOT recommend this device for ADS-B usage. For ADS-B applications, consider the NESDR SMArt instead, Nooelec SKU 100700 and 100701.

Don't expect to reach 2200MHz, so just an overpriced Nesdr SmarteeReview by Martin HB9FXX

Having already some R820T based Nooelec NESDR Smart(ee) and being very pleased by them i ordered an XTR version with an E4000 tuner as i was looking for the 2200-2250MHz region. I was surprised the advertised top frequency was 'approximately' up to 2350MHz. My highest frequency of interest being 100MHz below the 'appropriate' highest frequency announced i tried my luck but was disappointed.

Already having a (non-nooelec) e4000 based rtl-sdr tuner that tops at 2193MHz i thought Nooelec must have been really lucky in provisioning e4000 tuner chips or with careful design managed to get the best out of an e4000 and reach 2350MHz on some of its devices, and somewhat lower on the rest. But from the advertised specs i still expected to be able to reach 2250MHz. Unfortunately my Nooelec Smartee-XTR tops at 2182MHz, lower than the one i already have.

So quite disappointed as i was used of better from Nooelec.

Here the max frequency range of my Nooelec Smartee XTR:

$ rtl_test -t

Using device 0: Generic RTL2832U OEM

Sampling at 2048000 S/s.
Benchmarking E4000 PLL...
[E4K] PLL not locked for 51000000 Hz!
[E4K] PLL not locked for 2182000000 Hz!
[E4K] PLL not locked for 1092000000 Hz!
[E4K] PLL not locked for 1258000000 Hz!
E4K range: 52 to 2181 MHz
E4K L-band gap: 1092 to 1258 MHz

Now i wonder whether i should try my luck on a second Nesdr Smartee XTR or not. But i guess the probability to get one that could reach 2250MHz or even 2225MHz would be quite low...

So update your description to an approximate top frequency of 2200MHz which would be more accurate. (Posted on 3/1/2020)
